2003 – Dewstow, Caerwent, Wales – Celts 4 Saxons 8

Dewstow

After weeks of nice sunny weather, the rain came down on the third annual challenge match between the Celts and the Saxons. Mark Pipes led the Celts side and played host to his opposing captain Matt Freeman. Respects were paid to the late Paul Newton who started this event. This competition has now been renamed in his name. Sixteen competitors took part at the Dewstow club, and a rain-lashed first stage of the event, the Greensome pairs saw a very competive battle for the 2-2 draw on the Valley course. All the matches went to the wire despite the conditions. Due to the late withdrawal of Rob Eadsforth (Saxons) through illness, young Dewstow junior captain, Ziggy Niblett swapped sides and deputised for the Saxons. The afternoon singles was played in much brighter conditions on the Park course which resulted in a 4 – 2 victory for the Saxons. Matt was awarded the trophy as captain of the visiting Saxons side who won the day 8 – 4. The day was ended with a few beers and a meal of curry and chips.

Celts: Mark Pipes (Captain), Richard Bradshaw, Gordon Wallace, John Thomas, Ken Niblett, Michael Griffiths, Tony Griffiths, Paul Griffiths.

Saxons: Matt Freeman (Captain), Richard Freeman, Tony Harris, Nadeem Sarwar, Stuart Perry, David Rose, John Hick, Ziggy Niblett.
